The TESLA Model 2009 (DUE IN 2011)

The Tesla Model S, which is due to go into full production at the end of 2011, is an all-electric powered luxury saloon with a versatile and practical interior. With a 300-mile range and 45-minute QuickCharge capability, theTesla Model S can carry five adults and two children in quiet comfort. Charges can be made from a 110V, 220V or 440V outlet and Tesla are working with the US government to set up charging stations at various locations.The drivetrain of the Tesla Model S includes a liquid-cooled 9-inch motor, floor-mounted battery pack and a single-speed gearbox, delivering smooth, continuous acceleration. The electric motor allows for a highly impressive 0-60 mph sprint time of just 5.6 seconds. The top speed is 120 mph.

Designed by Franz von Holzhausen, the car's aggressive stance gives way to a modern silhouette, with minimal front and rear overhangs for maximum space efficiency. The car's mature face defines the future of the Tesla brand and incorporates the touches from the Tesla Roadster. Environmentally friendly materials are incorporated throughout, including water-based paint for the exterior, chrome-free vegetable tanned Italian leather on interior, and 100 percent recycled PET plastic carpeting from Futuris. Other high-tech features of the Tesla Model S include a panoramic glass roof with sliding moon roof, permanent 3G connectivity with Internet, HD and satellite radio, 17-inch touchscreen display housed in the center console and a fully digital instrument cluster.

sometimes become a reality and today we can boldly say this is true. Over the years in movies and cartoons we have seen lots of fantasies like a car diving under water and in some case flying. Such can be seen in one of James Bond 007 movie “The Spy Who Loved Me” where his car transformed into a scuba car when it dives underwater, then it was a fantasy but today it is a reality. A scuba car that operates both on land and underwater was produced in 2008. New Models Unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show

From a Green Car perspective, electric vehicles are a priority awaiting technical advances. Two notable EVs debuted in Tokyo: the Subaru G4e and Mitsubishii-MIEV Sport.
The G4e is a sporty five-seater showcasing Subaru's "next-generation" vanadium technology lithium-ion batteries. Developed in-house by Subaru, the batteries are said to double energy density and allow the G4e to travel 200 km on a charge. A full charge requires eight hours, but the batteries can be juiced up with quick charge in just 15 minutes to bring them up to 80 percent capacity.

Mitsubishi's iMIEV Sport is the company's environmental flagship. It features an advanced 330 volt lithium-ion battery and an electric powered four-wheel-drive system utilizing three motors. Two in-wheel motors drive the front wheels and a single motor powers the rear wheels. The driver never needs to plug the iMIEV in, thanks to a wireless charging system that utilizes a microwave transmitter that can be mounted in a location like the garage floor and a receiver that's located in the underside of the car. The ultimate electric car that can outpace a Ferrari

For drivers who want to be green but not boring, the new electric Lightning supercar could prove the ultimate eco-friendly boys' toy.
This emission free 130mph sports car - which has a hint of Jaguar, Aston Martin and TVR styling - can outpace a Porsche 911 or a Ferrari 575 - sprinting from rest to 60mph in under four seconds.
And though it will cost you a tingling £150,000, it is simply powered by 30 rechargeable batteries and doesn't use an ounce of fossil fuel.
The British-built two-seater 'Lightning' is fitted with four wheel-mounted motors that combine to power the car to 60 mph in under four seconds.
It develops 700 brake-horse-power - equivalent to about seven Ford fiestas.

The Lightning, which is expected to be track tested later this year, began life as a petrol-driven vehicle so developers could come up with a suitable chassis.
Designers at the Peterborough-based Lightning Car Company eventually settled on an aluminium honeycomb and a structure drawn from Formula One technology.
The car is powered by four electric motors mounted in each of the hubs of the 20 inch wheels.
All four motors are revolutionary 'Hi-Pa Drive' units developed by UK firm PML Flightlink Ltd.
Because there are no gears - or even a gear-stick - the electric power is instantaneous, allowing the phenomenal acceleration.
The energy-efficient motors produce huge levels of torque - or 'pulling power' - but are still lightweight enough for a performance sports car.
The Lightning will also feature an advanced 'regenerative energy system', where the car's batteries are recharged by lost friction energy captured when the ant-lock brakes are applied.
Similar technology will be adopted into Formula One from 2008 when so-called kinetic energy recovery systems (KERS) become mandatory.
The car also has traction control to stop skidding, electric doors and windows, and high-powered halogen headlamps.
Inside, the driver will be swathed in an all-leather or leather and alcantara interior. There's also a two piece removeable hard top.
Lightning Car Company technical director Arthur Wolstenholme said: "Ten, or perhaps even five years ago, electric power was dismissed as a poor substitute for petrol, diesel or liquid petroleum gas (LPG). But the world has now moved on significantly. Link......

Hyundai i-Blue Fuel-Cell Vehicle Gets Serious About Hydrogen

Korean automaker Hyundai is no stranger to zero emission fuel cell technology. Hyundai initially demonstrated fuel cell capability to the world by packaging FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) technology in the Santa Fe SUV back in 2000. Five years of development led to a second generation FCEV based on the Tucson platform in 2006, with power increased to 80 kW and lithium-polymer batteries added. This automaker’s fuel cell expertise has also been demonstrated at a mass transit level with fuel cell powered buses.
While utilizing the Santa Fe and Tucson did work well to forward the company’s fuel cell development program, packaging fuel cell technology into existing vehicle platforms has limitations that require engineers to accept compromises that can get in the way of optimum powertrain design. Recently, Hyundai moved beyond this with its introduction of an all-new, purpose-built FCEV concept that’s nothing less than stunning. The new Hyundai i-Blue was designed from the start to integrate the latest third generation fuel cell technology. According to Dr. Hyun-Soon Lee, Hyundai’s president of Research and Development, the i-Blue makes a tremendous leap forward for the automaker’s R&D program, with the company’s engineering team successfully designing a more compact fuel cell vehicle while retaining the safety, comfort, convenience, and driving range of a traditional internal combustion vehicle.
The i-Blue is a small “D” segment car, which Hyundai describes as a 2+2 crossover platform. Much more compact than the existing FCEV SUVs, i-Blue required significant engineering advancements. Downsizing requirements are addressed by the third generation fuel cell technology that enables placing the new and compact 100 kW fuel cell stack beneath the floor of the cabin, rather than in the engine compartment. Placement of the fuel cell and battery mass low and in the middle of the vehicle delivers an optimum 50-50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity for optimum handling dynamics. Link......

Electric iQ's a bright spark

Toyota will be launching an electric version of its iQ next year, albeit with different bodywork and styling to keep it separate from the upmarket (read expensive) current iQ. The electric car will have a motor in each wheel and will have a range of 93 miles. Link......

Solar flair can cool Toyota Prius

Toyota Prius T Spirit models will now be available with an optional Solar Pack, that uses solar panels in the car's roof to help power a small electric fan that circulates air around the cabin.
You can trigger the system from the key fob so that when you get into the car it's already nice and cool.
Toyota says it can reduce temperatures from 80C to 45C. (Even so, I wouldn't want to drive a car that was 45C inside.)
The solar panel system means you don't need to turn the air-conditioning on full blast, meaning you use less fuel.
But since the Solar Pack costs £1,450, I'd opt for the old-fashioned, cheaper, fuel-efficient method of opening a window. Link.......

Emissions impossible for Toyota

Toyota used every trick it could think of to reduce emissions on its Land Cruiser - including pouring thinner oil into the axles. Simple, but effective it seems.
The Co2 emissions of its Land Cruiser from come down from 238g/km to 224g/km, which doesn't sound like a big deal but it does bring the chunky 4x4's road tax down from £405 to £215, saving punters £190. Mind you, if you're spending £29,630 on buying a Land Cruiser you can probably cope with the tax.

Jaguar graduates to the supercar class

Jag's brilliant XKR just graduated into the supercar class.
German tuner Arden will take off the speed limiter, bolt on a new exhaust, tweak the suspension and brakes and stick on 21-inch rubber to give a genuine 200mph. With car and conversion costing less than £100k, the Arden XKR just became one of Britain's most desirable superswift convertibles. Link.......

The Prius-fighter - battle of the hybrids.

I expected to be disappointed by the Honda Insight. Compared with the radical Mk I version of the late 90s, it looks just like a Prius.
Where's the audacity and the revolution?
At a touch over £15,000, it's the cheapest petrol-electric around, and, with 101g/km CO2 and none of the nasty toxins you get from turbodiesels, the 1.3 hybrid's credentials are squeaky clean.
Mind you, I only managed mid-50s mpg and couldn't get anywhere near the claimed 64.2.

Chevrolet Cruze in control

There are two types of Chevrolet. The first, the American ones like the Corvette sports car and Camaro muscle car, are packed with blaring angry V8 engines of at least six litres and have more than 400bhp.
They get through tyres like a politician gets through excuses and they're enormous fun. Trouble is, they're left-hand drive and a bit expensive.
And then there's the other Chevrolets. Modest family cars made in Korea that used to be known as Daewoos.
They don't smoke their tyres unless you take them off and throw them on a bonfire. In fact they don't do anything dramatic except get you from to A to B and not cost you a lot of money in the process.
This is the new Chevrolet Cruze. It replaces the Lacetti, which is the car currently employed as Top Gear's reasonably priced car in which celebrities frighten themselves by trying to drive too fast or through a field. Or a tyre wall.
There's nothing frightening about the Cruze - not least the price. The one we have here is the 1.6i LS which costs £12,595 and apart from the S, which is around 500 quid less, it's the cheapest Cruze that you can buy.
That makes the new Chevrolet almost £2,500 cheaper than the most basic five-door Ford Focus. So in fact the Cruze is a very reasonably priced car.It is also bang up-to-date because underneath the neither ugly or beautiful (but far better-looking than the bland Lacetti) body is the chassis for the next Vauxhall Astra. link.......

An especially neat feature of the car is the full-length glass sunroof.

And photos are about all most of us are likely to see of the outrageous One-77 - with a price tag of around £1million, the real thing will be a rather rare sight. Fiat 500 First Drive: Will Americans Buy It

You might be wondering why KickingTires, the blog for car buyers, is posting about the subcompact Fiat 500, a car that's not available in the U.S. Well, it will be sold here next year, according to a Bloomberg report, and I had a chance to drive one on a recent trip to the United Kingdom. My early take on it is that it's a fun-to-drive little car in the vein of the Mini Cooper, but perhaps not the model the new Chrysler-Fiat alliance needs first in the U.S.

The Subaru Legacy has been redesigned for 2010 and now boasts a bigger backseat and improved gas mileage, with the same nimble steering the 2009 model had. Snowbelt drivers will appreciate its standard all-wheel drive, which few competitors offer.Among midsize family sedans, the Legacy is a jack of all trades. In trying to do everything, though, it doesn't master very much. The Legacy doesn't feel as high-rent as some of its competitors — particularly the suburb-infesting Honda Accord. Nor will its polarizing styling work for everyone.The 2010 Legacy — you can compare it with the '09 model here — comes in base, Premium and Limited trim levels, with a four- or six-cylinder engine. Toyota iQ: the lowdown
The Japanese scored one of the very few surprises of the Frankfurt show this year, with the titchy iQ concept car that previews Toyota’s new sub-Aygo city car. It’s one of our favourite cars at the show, bristling with intelligent new thinking and design flourishes to make small cars interesting again. And the best news is that Toyota has committed to building a production version, probably due in European showrooms by 2009.
So just how small is the iQ?

Škoda Motorsport logra el segundo puesto en el Rally de Ypres en Bélgica

Al igual que en el Rally de Las Azores hace unas semanas atrás, el equipo Škoda Motorsport volvió a brillar obteniendo el segundo y quinto puesto del Rally de Ypres en Bélgica (18-20 de junio), competencia celebrada dentro del marco del Intercontinental Rally Championship (IRC series).

Esta vez, el segundo lugar fue posible gracias a la brillante actuación de la dupla Jan Kopecký – Petr Starý (piloto y copiloto, respectivamente), quienes conduciendo los versátiles Fabia Super 2000 terminaron 13,3 segundos detrás del líder en un trayecto de 281 kms, con un buen número de tramos extremadamente rápidos y bastantes curvas cerradas para el deleite de los amantes de los rallyes. La otra dupla del equipo Juho Hänninen y Mikko Markkula estuvieron peleando arduamente el tercer lugar de la competencia en la última etapa pero desafortunadamente un defecto en el neumático del vehículo los obligó a conformarse con el quinto peldaño a 3 minutos y 35 segundos detrás del líder. Seis piqueros Venezolanos a medirse en Curazao

Los pilotos de aceleración venezolanos Seam Camacho, Alfredo Holland, Rafael Villalobos, Danilo Namur, Nixon Cedeño y William Allen participarán este fin de semana en la isla de Curazao en una competencia de piques que contará con la participación de especialistas de las Antillas holandesas y Venezuela, prueba que lleva por nombre Drag Race Nashonal.

Será la segunda participación de los especialistas criollos del cuarto de milla o 401 metros en el trazado de Curazao, tras la exitosa presentación cumplida a fines de abril y comienzos de mayo, cuando lograron una destacada participación al adjudicarse hasta tres victorias en distintas modalidades.

El marabino Danilo Namur, al volante de un Mustang conocido como “Zapato 2” fue uno de los vencedores en la pasada competencia curazoleña al adjudicarse la clase Super Stock B, mientras en la división Super Gas 9”90 fue segundo detrás de su compañero Angelo Canal. Continuar leyendo »

Venezolanos nuevamente victoriosos en Curazao

La delegación de automovilistas venezolanos que tomó parte el pasado fin de semana en la vecina isla de Curazao en una fecha del certamen local de aceleración, completó otra notable actuación al conseguir un triunfo por intermedio del zuliano Danilo Namur, además del segundo puesto obtenido por el anzoatiguense Nixon Cedeño.

Media docena de especialistas criollos se midieron en el trazado Curazao International Raceway ante los volantes antillanos, pruebas del cuarto de milla que se desarrollaron en tres categorías: Super Street 10”90, Super Gas 9”90 y Criollo Bracket, que se cumple de acuerdo al tiempo tope que puede registrar cada máquina.

El marabino Danilo Namur, vencedor en mayo en la justa internacional efectuada en el mismo escenario curazoleño, volvió a imponerse en la modalidad Super Gas 9.90, al comando de su Mustang “Zapato Grande” perteneciente a la formación que dirige el preparador zuliano Angelo Canal. En la segunda edición del ‘RCN Green Challenge’, llevada a cabo en el circuito norte del autódromo de Nurburgring (Alemania), Audi ha dado una muestra más de que el rendimiento deportivo y eficiencia no son mutuamente excluyentes.

Dos Audi TT 2.0 TFSI ocuparon el primero y el cuarto puesto en la competencia de eficiencia que constaba de cuatro vueltas al a trazado del ‘Infierno Verde’.

El Audi TT ganador consumió 1,6 litros por vuelta al circuito de 20,832 kilómetros, con lo cual logró disminuir 28 por ciento el consumo promedio de los autos de su clase en la ciudad –una marca que ningún otro participante logró igualar–. Continuar
